ATLANTIC BEACH - Most of the money that will cover the purchase is coming from an anonymous donor who also stipulated the city grant a "deed of conservation easement" to the North Florida Land Trust that will ensure the property is owned and maintained by Atlantic Beach according to state guidelines for preserves. That prohibits construction of roads, cell phone towers and private docks in the preserve area.
North Florida Land Trust board member Mark Middlebrook said he's thrilled about the deal. "I'm really glad that we're reaching some sort of conclusion. I think it's entirely appropriate that Atlantic Beach has control of this gateway."
Resident Ellen Glasser said during the public hearing that the anonymous donor can't be thanked enough.
The city is already in the process of trying to make the land more accessible to the public to complement two other preserves in the area, including Dutton Island and Tideviews.
